Marine Wi-Fi and Starlink: Getting Reliable Connectivity on a Yacht

How to design a yacht connectivity stack, covering Starlink, LTE, marina Wi-Fi and shipboard networking, so guests, crew and bridge systems all stay online.

Guests expect the same connectivity on a yacht that they have at home: video calls, streaming in 4K, cloud back-ups, gaming. The bridge needs stable data too, for weather routing, charts and remote support. Getting that right on a moving vessel takes more than dropping a Starlink dish on the boat deck. Below is how the pieces fit together, and where owners and captains most often run into trouble.

The four connectivity sources on a modern yacht

1. Starlink Maritime / Roam

Low-earth-orbit satellite has changed offshore connectivity. Latency is close to a home fibre connection and speeds routinely clear 100 Mbps. On yachts we install Starlink Maritime for full ocean coverage, or Starlink Roam for coastal use, depending on the cruising pattern. Dish placement, cable runs, and unobstructed sky view are what make or break real-world performance.

2. Traditional VSAT

For redundancy, larger vessels keep a stabilised VSAT antenna as backup. Modern yachts often use it as a fall-back for critical bridge and telephony traffic rather than for guest streaming.

3. Cellular / LTE / 5G

In-shore and in-marina, cellular is often the fastest and cheapest link. A marine cellular router with an external MIMO antenna and multi-SIM failover extracts real performance from the local networks in each port.

4. Marina Wi-Fi

Rarely the primary link, but useful as a supplementary source at berth. A directional marina Wi-Fi bridge lets the boat treat the marina AP as another WAN and pool the bandwidth with the other sources.

Bonding it all together

The right answer is almost never one link. A load-balancing / SD-WAN router, usually a Peplink on yachts, bonds Starlink, cellular, and marina Wi-Fi into a single virtual connection. Guest video calls survive a Starlink obstruction because traffic hops onto cellular in milliseconds; large uploads use whichever link is cheapest at that moment.

If your guests complain that Zoom keeps dropping even though Starlink 'is working', the fix is almost always a bonding router with cellular failover, not more satellite bandwidth.

Shipboard networking: the part that usually breaks

Once WAN is sorted, the on-boat network has to actually deliver it to every cabin, deck, and bridge instrument. A yacht network typically includes:

  • A managed core switch with VLANs separating guest, crew, bridge, and IoT traffic
  • PoE access points on each deck level for consistent Wi-Fi coverage
  • A guest SSID with per-device bandwidth limits so one 4K stream cannot starve the boat
  • A separate bridge / OT VLAN with strict firewall rules
  • Structured cabling in stainless-jacketed marine cable, not indoor CAT6

Most 'the Wi-Fi is bad' complaints are actually shipboard networking issues: too few APs, overlapping channels, or a cheap consumer router acting as the bottleneck. A proper survey identifies dead spots deck by deck.

TVs, satellite, and streaming

Modern installs lean heavily on IP streaming: guests bring their own Netflix, Apple TV, and gaming accounts. Traditional satellite TV still matters for live sports and news, especially crossing regions. A well-designed AV rack integrates a streaming distribution layer so any cabin TV can pull satellite, streaming, or a plugged-in device from the salon.
