Yacht Carpet Cleaning at the Dock: What to Expect After a Charter

How professional dockside yacht carpet cleaning works after a charter, from pre-treatment through low-moisture drying, and what interior crews should ask for.

After a busy charter, the interior takes a beating. Sand, salt water, spilled wine, sunscreen and heavy foot traffic across the salon and cabin carpets add up fast. A dockside carpet clean between charters resets the interior without pulling the boat out of the water. Below is what a good one looks like, and what interior crews should ask for.

Why yacht carpets need a specialist

Marine carpets are not the same as residential carpets. Salons often use dense wool, wool-blend, or silk-blend carpets with delicate backings. Cabins may have synthetic loop-pile carpet designed for humidity. A generic home carpet cleaner using high-alkaline detergents and heavy water volumes can cause browning, fibre distortion, and long drying times that trap moisture against the sub-floor, which is how you get mildew.

A marine carpet cleaning specialist uses fibre-appropriate chemistry, controlled moisture, and drying equipment sized for interior spaces where you cannot open every hatch.

The typical dockside process

1. Walk-through and fibre check

The technician walks each area with the chief stew or captain. Fibre type is identified (wool, wool blend, synthetic), stains are marked, and any pre-existing damage is documented. Furniture is either lifted onto blocks or protected with tabs.

2. Vacuum and dry soil removal

A commercial upright removes the dry soil that a rotary extraction alone cannot reach. Skipping this step is the number-one reason home carpet cleans look worse when they dry.

3. Targeted pre-treatment

Salt rings, wine, coffee, sunscreen, grease from the galley. Each gets a targeted spotter matched to the stain and the fibre. Pre-treatment sits for 5 to 10 minutes so the emulsifier has time to break the bond before extraction.

4. Hot-water extraction

A truck-mount or dockside portable delivers hot water at controlled pressure and immediately extracts it. On a wool salon carpet the technician will run a lower-pressure, wool-safe rinse and make more dry passes than wet passes to keep moisture low.

5. Low-moisture drying

Air movers and, where appropriate, a small dehumidifier get the carpet down to a safe moisture level in a few hours rather than overnight. This is critical on a yacht where sub-floor ventilation is limited.

How long should it take?

For a 30-45m yacht with a full salon and four to six cabins, a two-technician crew usually completes carpets, rugs, and upholstery spot-cleaning in a single working day. Drying to walk-on ready takes another 2 to 4 hours after the last extraction pass. Larger vessels, or a full deep-clean with upholstery included, may run into a second day.

Rule of thumb: budget one working day per 300 to 400 square metres of carpeted interior, plus drying time. Ask your provider to confirm in the written quote.

What to include in the quote request

  • Vessel type, length and current port
  • Which areas need cleaning: salon, cabins, corridors, crew mess, stairways
  • Rugs and runners (measured or photographed)
  • Upholstery: sofas, headboards, dining chairs
  • Known stains, pet presence, or recent water ingress
  • Timeline: post-charter turnaround date and next guest arrival

The more detail you provide up front, the faster you'll get an accurate written quote back, usually within one business day.

Between professional cleans

  • Vacuum salon and high-traffic corridors daily during charter
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean white cloth, never rub
  • Keep a marine-safe spotter in the interior stores kit
  • Rotate rugs quarterly to even out UV exposure
  • Book a professional deep clean every 3 to 4 charters, or at minimum twice per season
